C.A.R. Crash Analysis Recorder
Most emergency vehicles have to make a journey in the shortest possible time. Drivers of police cars, ambulances and fire vehicles have to exercise extreme judgement to balance safety on the road with the need to arrive promptly at the scene. If an accident does happen, it is crucial to have information about what was happening in the vehicle at the time. This information helps in event reconstruction and investigation, and can protect the driver from the misinformed opinions of untrained witnesses. A study of the last 100 pieces of information gives a clear view of how the vehicle was being driven at the time of an incident, or during a chase. Not just a crash recorder, the C.A.R. Crash Analysis Recorder can be used as a guide to good driving behaviour.
Features
- small (5" x 1" x 2")
- very strong (manufactured in thick cast alloy to ensure maximum possible survival in event of a major crash)
- onboard memory sufficient for up to 100 incidents
- internal battery to ensure the unit's long-term memory
- bright orange for ease of retrieval
The vehicle operator can set an appropriate "G-Force level" for journeys. For example, Level "G1" is used for normal driving conditions: "G4" would be appropriate in Formula 1 racing conditions. An (optional) crash switch triggers the device in the event of a collision. As the box is like a flight recorder, a "black box", it can be used as evidence. A complete audit trail of how the data was produced is included in the software package provided. All installation tests are incorporated in the software together with an audit trail so that each result can be verified in court if necessary.

Information collected
Each and every time the preset G-Force level is exceeded, or if the crash switch is triggered, the C.A.R. Crash Analysis Recorder records the previous 16 seconds of activity in a second-by-second trace.
The unit records the status of:
- left / right indicator
- flashing lights
- siren (including duration)
- footbrake
Calibration and data retrieval
The C.A.R. Crash Analysis Recorder can be calibrated using the small hand-held PalmPilot (no need for garage personnel to wander around with laptops). Data retrieval is achieved via a small interface. In order to ensure that data is available at the scene, or later on for investigation, three methods of download are included:
- via simple Palmtop computer, Palm IIIe (cheap and pocket size)
- to a laptop computer
- to a desktop PC
